Since the funding announcement in October 2008, there has been unprecedented demand for midwifery services in Alberta that far outstrips the capacity of our members to provide good care. Please be assured that the Alberta Association of Midwives is doing its best to grow the profession in a sustainable way. The AAM sincerely regrets the problems that so many women are having accessing midwifery care. We suggest that you contact a midwife as soon as you know that you are pregnant, and to expect that you may be put on a waitlist. Spaces are generally filled not on a first come first served basis, but according to several factors such as 1) the numbers of Courses of Care available to the practice and 2) your due date and the number of spaces available in that month to different types of pregnancies (first, subsequent, VBAC etc). A Course of Care is an entire series of care provided by your midwife including prenatal visits, labour and birth, and care up to 6 weeks postpartum.
Please be aware that no one in Alberta should be paying out of pocket for midwifery services. Only registered midwives are able to provide fully funded midwifery care in Alberta.
